Eedris Abdulkareem fires back as NBC bans his new song from radio, TV

Nigerian singer Eedris Abdulkareem has fired back at the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) following its decision to ban his latest track, “Tell Your Papa,” from being played on radio and TV.

NBC issued a directive to broadcasters, labeling the song as “Not To Be Broadcast (NTBB)” under Section 3.1.8 of the Nigeria Broadcasting Code. The commission claimed the lyrics violate responsible broadcasting guidelines, despite the track gaining popularity online.

In response, Eedris took to Instagram to criticize the Tinubu administration, describing it as one of the “most insensitive, vindictive, and malicious” governments in Nigeria’s history. He said any form of honest critique is treated as a crime under the current leadership.

He wrote:
“NBC JUST BANNED MY NEW SINGLE ‘TELL YOUR PAPA’
It’s clear that in Nigeria, truth and constructive criticism are seen as threats by those in power. This administration, led by President Bola Tinubu, is quickly making a name for itself as deeply disconnected and hostile to dissent.”

Eedris also compared the situation to the 2004 ban of his iconic song “Jaga Jaga” by former President Obasanjo, suggesting little progress has been made in terms of freedom of expression.

He concluded with a powerful quote: “The conscience is an open wound, only the truth can heal it.”
