Kidnappers demand N100m ransom for two doctors abducted in Cross River

The Nigerian Medical Association, NMA, Cross River chapter, says the abductors of two of its members have demanded N100 million as ransom to secure their release.

 

Felix Archibong, chairman of NMA in the state, confirmed this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria on Saturday, November 19, in Calabar.

 

Mr Archibong said that the two medical doctors were abducted on Friday alongside two others at Ikomita section of the Calabar-Ikom Highway.

 

One of the abducted doctors has been identified as Ekpo Etim Egong, a volunteer physician with the General Hospital, Calabar.

 

The victims were said to be on their way back to Ogoja after attending a workshop in Calabar, the state capital.

 

The gunmen were said to have blocked the highway during the operation and shot sporadically into the air to scare away passers-by and zoomed off immediately they succeeded in abducting seven victims.

 

A witness said out of the seven persons they kidnapped, three were females and four were males.

 

According to him, the hoodlums later released the three females, after dispossessing them of their valuables including phones, watches and cash, and took the four males away into the bush.

 

The State Commissioner of Police, Sule Balarabe, who confirmed the incident, said his command would do everything humanly possible to secure their release unhurt.

 

“We are going to comb the forest to secure their release. I assure that the matter will adequately be dealt with. I am not just sitting in Calabar to give orders, I am also on ground with my men,” the CP stated.

 

“We have the cooperation of the locals and I believe we will have positive result. I am on ground with various units. We are hitting the nails on its head as I speak, we must make sure we secure the release of the victims unharmed,” he declared.
