Nissan’s New Adventure EV Channels the Xterra—But Should It Borrow the Name?

Nissan is gearing up to launch a rugged new electric SUV, and after seeing it in person, it’s safe to say it hits the mark for what today’s buyers want: bold styling, off-road flair, and everyday practicality. The vehicle draws heavy inspiration from the iconic Xterra, though it’s clearly a more modern and polished machine. The big question? Whether it deserves to carry the Xterra name.

Unveiled behind closed doors at Nissan’s “Full Speed Ahead” event in Japan, the SUV was one of several future models on display—alongside the next-gen Leaf, Rogue, and a Juke EV. Of them all, this adventure-ready EV stood out with its rugged design and nostalgic nods to the past.

It’s about the size of a Subaru Outback and sports features like roof racks, aggressive tires, chunky proportions, and even the signature Xterra-style rear window. Visually, it gives off a mix of Santa Fe Wilderness, Rivian R3, and original Xterra energy—wrapped in a futuristic, squared-off look.

But while the styling screams adventure, don’t expect this to be a full-blown off-roader. Unlike the old body-on-frame Xterra, this EV is more of a soft-roader—a crossover aimed at light trails and outdoor trips rather than boulder crawling. Think Ford Bronco Sport rather than Wrangler.

As Nissan’s design boss Alfonso Albaisa pointed out, the SUV’s looks may out-promise its actual off-road capability. But that’s the point—consumers are craving EVs that look rugged and authentic, not smooth and anonymous. And Nissan clearly sees potential in that growing niche.

Still, naming this new model after the Xterra isn’t a done deal. Nissan has re-registered the Xterra trademark, but they’re debating whether the name fits a vehicle that’s more premium and less utilitarian than its predecessor. The heritage is there, but the mission is different.

So, what’s in a name? Should Nissan revive the Xterra badge for this new electric SUV, or carve out a new identity to match its new direction?
