As political activity gradually intensifies ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 general elections, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has made it clear he will not announce a running mate until after the All Progressives Congress (APC) holds its national convention. The clarification came from Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser on Information and Strategy to the President, who addressed the rising speculation over Tinubu’s potential re-election ticket.

Speaking to journalists in Abuja, Onanuga emphasized that while the president remains focused on governance, political decisions concerning 2027 will follow the APC’s internal processes. He said, “President Tinubu is a party man. The choice of a running mate will be made in accordance with the outcome and resolutions of the party’s national convention. No decision has been made yet.”

Strategic Delay or Political Calculus?

Tinubu’s decision to wait may be strategic, allowing him to navigate the evolving zonal power dynamics, internal party alliances, and emerging contenders within the APC. Analysts say that the president’s delay is intended to keep various interest blocs engaged and guessing, while also giving room for consensus-building within the party.

There has been rising speculation over whether Vice President Kashim Shettima, who served alongside Tinubu in his first term, will retain his position as running mate if Tinubu seeks a second term. Shettima has remained loyal and publicly aligned with Tinubu’s policy direction, but party insiders suggest that other regional forces, especially from the South-East and North-Central zones, may push for greater inclusion.

“This is not the time for speculation or backdoor lobbying,” Onanuga stated. “When the time is right, and the party meets, the process will be transparent. The president will abide by the party’s democratic decision.”

APC Convention Will Set the Tone

The APC national convention, expected to be held sometime in early 2026, will play a crucial role in shaping the party’s 2027 electoral strategy. Delegates will deliberate on zoning arrangements, leadership selection, and ultimately the composition of the party’s presidential ticket.

Within the party, key figures such as Senate President Godswill Akpabio, Minister of the Federal Capital Territory Nyesom Wike, and several northern governors are rumored to be influential in the eventual outcome of the running mate debate. Tinubu’s continued silence is seen as an attempt to avoid premature political alignments that could destabilize the party’s cohesion ahead of the primaries.

Focus Remains on Governance

For now, Tinubu is reportedly prioritizing economic reforms, security challenges, and infrastructure development, with the presidency cautioning against premature campaign distractions. The administration has faced both praise and criticism over subsidy removal, forex liberalization, and its handling of inflation and food security issues. Observers say the performance of Tinubu’s administration over the next 12–18 months will be a major determinant of the tone and reception of any 2027 re-election campaign.

As the countdown to 2027 continues, President Tinubu’s approach reflects a mix of political patience and strategic calculation. By holding off on the announcement of a running mate until after the APC convention, he not only reinforces his commitment to party structure but also buys time to evaluate the best option to secure a second term—if he chooses to run.

Until then, Nigerians and political stakeholders alike will be watching the APC’s internal movements closely, waiting to see how the ruling party intends to position itself in an increasingly competitive political landscape.
