Former Labour Party vice-presidential candidate in the 2023 general election, Yusuf Datti Baba-Ahmed, has declared his readiness to support and work for Peter Obi in the 2027 presidential race—on the condition that the former Anambra State governor returns to the Labour Party.

Baba-Ahmed made the disclosure during a recent interview with Trust TV, days after Obi officially exited the Labour Party to join the coalition-backed African Democratic Congress (ADC).

Despite Obi’s defection, Baba-Ahmed said there was no bitterness between them, stressing that their political differences had not affected their long-standing personal relationship.

“Peter Obi didn’t invite me to the ADC, and that is understandable,” Baba-Ahmed said. “People know my principles and the kind of political engagements I am willing to be part of.”

He noted that his respect for Obi remains intact, revealing that the former presidential candidate recently attended a family wedding at his residence—an indication, he said, that their bond remains strong.

“Our personal relationship is solid. Just a few days ago, on the 12th, Peter Obi personally attended a wedding in my home. I have deep respect for him,” he stated.

Baba-Ahmed further explained that if Obi fails to secure the ADC’s presidential ticket and chooses to return to the Labour Party, he would not hesitate to mobilise support for him.

“If he doesn’t get the ADC ticket and decides to come back, I will work for him. I will do my best to help him secure the Labour Party ticket,” he said.

He also pledged to play a reconciliatory role within the party, promising to help resolve any lingering disagreements between Obi and aggrieved stakeholders should he return.

“I will make efforts to mend fences between him and anyone he may not be on good terms with,” Baba-Ahmed added.

The remarks have reignited conversations around Obi’s political future and the evolving dynamics ahead of the 2027 presidential election.
