As Nigeria edges closer to the 2027 general elections, political realignments appear to be taking shape within the opposition. Delta State’s former governor and 2023 vice-presidential candidate, Ifeanyi Okowa, has hinted that former Vice President Atiku Abubakar may be on his way out of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) before the next electoral cycle.

Speaking during an interaction with journalists on Monday, Okowa suggested that Atiku’s recent political moves and statements indicate a growing distance from the PDP’s current direction. “The signs are clear for anyone who cares to look. Atiku is a seasoned politician, and his recent body language suggests he may be considering other options ahead of 2027,” Okowa said.

Although he refrained from providing specific details, Okowa emphasized that the PDP must brace itself for potential changes and focus on strengthening its internal unity. “Whatever happens, the PDP must remain committed to its core ideals and ensure that it fields strong candidates capable of winning elections,” he added.

Atiku, who has been a dominant figure in Nigeria’s political landscape for decades, has had a history of switching political affiliations when strategic interests demand. His rumored departure is already fueling speculation about possible mergers, new alliances, or the formation of a new political force ahead of 2027.

Political analysts believe that any move by Atiku could significantly reshape the opposition landscape and influence the strategies of other political stakeholders. For now, Nigerians will be watching closely to see how events unfold in the coming months.
