Donald Trump has addressed speculation about his interest in a third term, making it clear that he has no intention of pursuing one, despite earlier remarks that had sparked such discussions.
In an interview aired on May 4 on NBC’s Meet the Press, Trump told host Kristen Welker, “This is not something I’m looking to do,” when asked whether he was considering a third term. He further explained, “I’m aiming to serve four successful years and then hand it over to someone — ideally, another strong Republican — to keep things moving forward.”
This clarification follows recent comments by Trump at rallies, where he had briefly entertained the idea of a third term, causing concern among critics who questioned his understanding of the constitutional limits on presidential tenure. The U.S. Constitution clearly restricts presidents to two terms, and Trump’s musings had raised alarms among opponents.
The interview took place during Trump’s visit to the University of Alabama, where he spoke at the university’s commencement ceremony in Coleman Coliseum, addressing the graduating class.
