Former Kano State governor and presidential candidate of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, has publicly dismissed growing speculations that he is planning to defect to the All Progressives Congress (APC). In a recent statement, Kwankwaso firmly denied the rumors, labeling them as politically motivated distractions aimed at destabilizing his party and misinforming the public.

The rumors gained traction following reports of backdoor meetings between key APC figures and some NNPP stakeholders. Observers noted the strategic importance of Kwankwaso in northern Nigerian politics and speculated that his potential defection could significantly reshape the political landscape ahead of the 2027 general elections. However, Kwankwaso has now put those speculations to rest with a categorical denial.

“I Am Not Defecting to APC” – Kwankwaso

Speaking during a press briefing in Abuja, Kwankwaso reaffirmed his commitment to the NNPP and its vision for a better Nigeria. He described the APC defection rumors as baseless and malicious, crafted by those uncomfortable with the growing popularity of the NNPP in several northern states.

“I have not met with anyone from APC regarding defection, and I have no intention of doing so,” Kwankwaso said. “My focus is on building the NNPP into a credible alternative for Nigerians who are tired of recycled politics and failed promises.”

Kwankwaso stressed that his political journey has always been guided by principle and service to the people, not political expediency. He reiterated his belief that Nigeria needs a break from the traditional power blocs, emphasizing that the NNPP offers a new direction for the country’s political future.

Allegations of Political Realignment

The defection rumors intensified after some high-profile politicians, formerly associated with the APC, were seen attending NNPP-related events, while others who had previously decamped to NNPP reportedly opened lines of communication with their former APC colleagues. These developments led many to believe that a political realignment was underway and that Kwankwaso might be returning to his former party.

Kwankwaso, however, described these narratives as part of a broader campaign of misinformation. According to him, political opponents are leveraging propaganda to cause confusion within the NNPP’s ranks and create a false image of instability.

“This is not the first time such rumors are being circulated. It’s a tactic to distract us from our goals and to shake the confidence of our supporters. But we remain focused,” he declared.

Political Relevance and Strategic Value

Rabiu Kwankwaso remains one of the most influential political figures in northern Nigeria, commanding a loyal following through the “Kwankwasiyya” movement. His political reach, especially in Kano and surrounding states, makes him a crucial asset for any party hoping to make significant inroads in the region.

Some political analysts believe the defection rumors may be a deliberate strategy by the APC to court Kwankwaso ahead of the 2027 elections. They argue that his experience, grassroots mobilization ability, and influence could greatly benefit the ruling party if he were to align with them.

Despite these speculations, Kwankwaso insists that his loyalty lies with the NNPP and that his focus is on strengthening the party’s structure, expanding its support base, and preparing it for future electoral success.

NNPP’s Internal Strategy and Future Plans

Kwankwaso also used the opportunity to discuss the NNPP’s growth and strategic plans. He revealed that the party is undergoing a nationwide reorganization to solidify its presence in all six geopolitical zones. According to him, consultations are ongoing with various stakeholders to build a more robust and inclusive political platform.

“Our goal is not just to compete but to win,” he said. “We are building a party that will prioritize education, job creation, national unity, and security—core areas where Nigerians are desperately yearning for change.”

Kwankwaso also assured supporters that the NNPP is addressing internal challenges and will soon unveil a roadmap for youth and women inclusion, political education, and nationwide mobilization ahead of the next election cycle.

Standing Firm Amidst Political Turbulence

With this public statement, Kwankwaso has firmly put to rest the swirling rumors of his defection to the APC. His unwavering commitment to the NNPP signals a determination to forge a new political path and offer Nigerians a credible alternative to the two dominant parties.

In a political climate rife with speculation and shifting allegiances, Kwankwaso’s stance sends a clear message: not every political move is driven by opportunism, and some leaders are still guided by ideology, loyalty, and long-term vision.

As Nigeria edges closer to another general election season, the political chessboard continues to evolve. But for now, Kwankwaso stands his ground, refusing to be drawn into the familiar cycle of defections and alliances that have come to characterize the country’s political elite.
