Elder statesman and chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Chief Bode George, has made a passionate appeal to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to reconcile with and reinstate Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara, drawing inspiration from the spirit of June 12, Nigeria’s emblem of democracy, unity, and national healing.

Speaking during a media interaction to commemorate this year’s Democracy Day, Bode George urged the president to emulate the same reconciliatory gesture he extended to Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu after the tensions of the 2023 elections. He emphasized that the essence of June 12 should not be symbolic alone but must reflect in actions that promote unity, forgiveness, and democratic stability.

“President Tinubu should use this historic moment of June 12 to demonstrate leadership and statesmanship by forgiving Governor Fubara and reinstating him fully to his constitutional authority,” George said. “Just as he overlooked the post-election bitterness in Lagos and supported Sanwo-Olu, we expect the same maturity and magnanimity toward Fubara in Rivers State.”

George’s remarks come amid lingering tensions between the presidency and the Rivers State government, stemming from political power struggles that have threatened the peace and governance structure in the oil-rich state. Fubara, who was once seen as having the support of the center, has been embroiled in a fierce political battle, raising concerns over the stability of one of Nigeria’s most economically vital regions.

The PDP elder emphasized that the ideals of June 12, symbolized by the late Chief M.K.O. Abiola’s struggle for democratic freedom, demand not just free and fair elections, but a commitment to justice, reconciliation, and the dignity of officeholders elected by the people.

“Forgiveness and unity are not weaknesses—they are strengths of true leadership,” Bode George continued. “Let us not allow personal grudges to override national interest. The people of Rivers voted for Fubara, and he deserves the right to govern in peace and dignity.”

He further urged other political stakeholders to set aside partisan interests and work towards healing the growing divisions in Nigeria’s political landscape.

As Nigerians mark Democracy Day in reflection of hard-won freedoms and the sacrifices of democratic heroes, Bode George’s call adds weight to the ongoing national conversation about political tolerance, federal power dynamics, and the true meaning of democracy in practice.
