JUST IN: Ibadan Poly Students Stage Massive Protest, Shut Down School Gates Over Renaming to Olunloyo Polytechnic

Hundreds of students of The Polytechnic, Ibadan took to the streets on Monday in a massive protest against the recent decision by the Oyo State Government to rename the institution. The demonstrators, armed with placards and chanting solidarity songs, blocked major roads around the institution and disrupted academic activities, demanding the immediate reversal of the new name.

The state government had announced the renaming of the institution to “Moshood Olalekan Aliyu Polytechnic” (MOA Polytechnic) in honor of a late political figure from the region. The decision, which was made without prior consultation with the student body or alumni, has been met with widespread criticism.

“Our Identity Is Not for Sale,” Students Cry Out

The students argued that the renaming erodes the legacy and brand identity of the institution, which was founded in 1970 and has built a reputation as one of Nigeria’s foremost polytechnics. Many described the action as politically motivated and insensitive to the institution’s heritage.

We are proud of The Polytechnic Ibadan and what it stands for. Changing its name without involving the students, staff, or alumni is a slap in the face to all of us,” said Tolu Adekunle, President of the Students’ Union Government (SUG). “This is not just about a name; it’s about our history and what it means to generations of students.

Placards carried by the protesting students bore inscriptions such as “Reverse the Name Now!”, “Poly Ibadan is Our Pride”, and “Don’t Politicize Our Future.”

Security Deployed, Academic Activities Disrupted

The protest, which began peacefully, escalated quickly as traffic was brought to a halt along the Sango-Eleyele Road. Security personnel from the Oyo State Police Command were deployed to the scene to prevent a breakdown of law and order. No violence was reported, but academic and administrative operations were suspended for the day.

The management of the institution issued a brief statement acknowledging the concerns of the students and appealed for calm while discussions with the state government are ongoing.

Mixed Reactions from the Public

While many sympathize with the students, some members of the public believe the government has the right to rename institutions under its jurisdiction. However, critics say such changes should follow due process and public engagement, especially when it concerns long-standing institutions.

Alumni of the institution have also joined the call for reversal. A statement released by the Polytechnic Ibadan Alumni Association described the move as “disrespectful” and “unnecessary,” urging the government to preserve the school’s historic identity.

Government Yet to Issue Clarification

As of press time, the Oyo State Government has yet to respond directly to the student protest. Sources within the Ministry of Education revealed that consultations with stakeholders may still take place, suggesting that the renaming may not be final.

Meanwhile, student leaders have vowed to continue peaceful demonstrations until their voices are heard. “We will not stop until this name change is reversed. Our school is not a political trophy,” one protester shouted during the march.

In Summary:
The ongoing protest at The Polytechnic Ibadan highlights rising student activism in Nigeria’s higher institutions, especially when decisions are made without stakeholder input. As tensions rise, all eyes remain on the Oyo State Government and whether it will heed the call of the students and reconsider its renaming directive.
