Delta State: Two Corps members, 3 naval personnel, 1 civilian die in navy gunboat mishap

Tragedy struck over the weekend as a routine naval operation ended in disaster, claiming the lives of three naval personnel, two National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members, and one civilian in a devastating gunboat mishap. The incident, which occurred in a yet-to-be-confirmed riverine location, has sent shockwaves across the nation, drawing grief, outrage, and calls for urgent investigation.

According to preliminary reports from the Nigerian Navy, the victims were on a patrol and community outreach assignment when their gunboat capsized under unclear circumstances. The corps members were said to be participating in a naval-assisted community development initiative in the coastal region when the ill-fated trip turned fatal. Eyewitnesses and local sources say the boat encountered mechanical failure before being overwhelmed by high waves, leading to the deadly incident.

The two NYSC members were reportedly attached to a naval facility for their mandatory national service. Their involvement in the trip was meant to foster civil-military cooperation and promote peace in the host communities. The civilian who also perished is believed to be a local guide or liaison officer assisting the team.

In a somber statement, the Nigerian Navy confirmed the loss and expressed deep sorrow over the deaths. “It is with heavy hearts that we announce the unfortunate loss of some of our personnel, two patriotic corps members, and a civilian collaborator during a maritime incident involving one of our patrol gunboats,” the statement read.

The NYSC Directorate has also reacted, describing the loss of the young corps members as “a national tragedy.” “They served with dedication and were committed to building bridges between the military and civilian populations. Their deaths are a blow to the service and the nation at large,” said NYSC Director General, Brigadier General Y.D. Ahmed.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, in a message delivered through his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, offered condolences to the bereaved families and described the fallen as “heroes of duty and service.” He urged a full probe into the incident to prevent future tragedies, especially those involving national youth assets.

Public reaction has been swift and emotional. Across social media, Nigerians have demanded greater safety protocols for security personnel and corps members engaged in national assignments. Many questioned why such young lives were exposed to perilous environments without adequate risk assessment and safety guarantees.

As investigations begin, military sources suggest that a combination of harsh weather conditions, possible equipment failure, and navigational error may have contributed to the accident. A joint board of inquiry has been set up to determine the exact cause and recommend sanctions or reforms where necessary.

Meanwhile, families of the deceased are grappling with grief. The NYSC has promised to provide full support, including counseling, burial assistance, and compensation where applicable.

This tragedy marks yet another dark chapter in Nigeria’s ongoing struggle to ensure the safety of both military personnel and civilian volunteers in dangerous terrains. For many, the loss of these young corps members—who answered the call to serve—is a painful reminder of the price of national service.
