In a dramatic turn of events, Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan of Kogi Central resumed her duties in the Nigerian Senate today, ending a six-month suspension that triggered legal battles and national attention.

Court Vindication and Return to Plenary

  • The Federal High Court in Abuja ruled on July 5, 2025 that the six-month suspension imposed by the Senate was excessive and unconstitutional, as it effectively denied her constituents representation for almost the entire legislative session.

  • Following the judgment, Ms. Akpoti-Uduaghan announced she would return on Tuesday, July 8, 2025,
  • resuming her legislative responsibilities .
  • Despite the Senate asserting it first needs the certified copy of the judgment before taking action  she proceeded with her return today, marking a significant show of resolve.

Celebration Across Her Constituency

  • Supporters welcomed her return with fanfare, celebrating what many describe as a victory for democratic representation and equity.

  • Prior to her return, she underscored that even during her suspension, she continued championing constituency projects—most notably the groundbreaking of modern markets in Okene and Okehi LGAs, featuring enhanced facilities for traders.

Senate Response & Political Tensions

  • The suspension, executed in March after a confrontation with Senate President Godswill Akpabio, was deemed “gross misconduct” by a Senate committee. However, it drew sharp criticism for its length and severity.

  • Even prior to her return, the Senate maintained it needed official documentation before reinstating her

  • The incident has sparked broader debate about legislative discipline, female representation, and the rights of constituents—placing Akpoti’s resumption at the center of national discussion.

What’s Next?

  • Attention now turns to how Akpoti-Uduaghan will engage in plenary and whether the Senate will enact reforms to limit suspension terms and enhance procedural fairness.

  • Her return is not only a personal milestone but also underscores concerns over due process in legislative sanctions and the vital importance of equitable representation.
