Vice President Kashim Shettima has come out to firmly deny reports suggesting that he criticized President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, describing the circulating narratives as gross misrepresentation of his remarks. In a statement released by his media office and further reinforced during a recent public engagement, Shettima emphasized that at no point did he question or challenge the leadership of President Tinubu, whom he described as a visionary leader committed to Nigeria’s progress.
The controversy began after excerpts from one of Shettima’s recent addresses at a political gathering went viral, with some media outlets interpreting his words as subtle jabs at the President’s handling of certain national issues. Social media further amplified the claims, leading to public speculation about a possible rift between the President and his Vice.
Reacting to the buzz, Shettima said, “It is unfortunate how words spoken in good faith are being twisted for mischief and political gain. I have never and will never undermine the leadership of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. We are a team, united by our shared vision for a stronger, more prosperous Nigeria.”
He went on to highlight the longstanding relationship between himself and the President, stressing that their political alliance is built on mutual respect, loyalty, and trust. According to him, such distortions are often the handiwork of those seeking to sow discord in the government’s top ranks ahead of 2027 political speculations.
“People who are trying to create division between us are wasting their time,” Shettima declared. “I am fully aligned with Mr. President’s agenda, and I will continue to support him as we work to rebuild this great nation.”
Analysts believe this public clarification was necessary, especially at a time when the administration is under increasing pressure to deliver on key economic and social reforms. Any sign of internal disagreement, even if untrue, could weaken public confidence and embolden opposition figures.
Presidency sources also confirmed that President Tinubu was briefed about the situation and had no doubt about Shettima’s loyalty. One insider said, “The President understands the nature of politics. He’s fully aware that some individuals and groups are working overtime to plant seeds of discord, but it won’t work.”
Meanwhile, political observers warn that this may not be the last time such rumors will surface, especially as power blocs begin subtle jockeying ahead of the next election cycle. But for now, Shettima’s statement has put to rest the immediate concerns and reaffirmed the administration’s united front.
As Nigeria continues to navigate through tough economic times and political uncertainty, unity at the top remains critical. Both Tinubu and Shettima appear keenly aware of this — and determined not to let distractions derail their mission.
