Nigeria has lost one of its most revered traditional rulers as Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona, the Awujale of Ijebu and paramount ruler of Ijebu Kingdom, passed away peacefully at the age of 91.

The Ogun State Government confirmed the monarch’s passing early Sunday morning in a statement issued by the Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs. According to palace sources, Oba Adetona died in his sleep after a brief illness, surrounded by family members and senior chiefs at his palace in Ijebu-Ode.

With his transition, the country bids farewell to one of the longest-reigning and most respected monarchs in Nigerian history — a royal father whose wisdom, courage, and reform-minded leadership spanned over six decades.

A Reign Like No Other

Born on May 10, 1934, Oba Sikiru Adetona ascended the throne as the Awujale of Ijebuland in April 1960, just months before Nigeria’s independence. His enthronement as king at the age of 26 marked the beginning of what would become one of the most remarkable royal reigns in the country.

Oba Adetona was not just a monarch; he was a modernizer. He redefined what it meant to be a traditional ruler in a democratic nation, combining royal dignity with progressive thought. Educated in the United Kingdom and a man of deep intellect, he consistently advocated for justice, transparency in governance, and the dignity of the Yoruba traditional institution.

Throughout military regimes and civilian administrations, Oba Adetona was a voice of reason and principle, never shying away from speaking truth to power. He commanded the respect of presidents, governors, business moguls, and ordinary Nigerians alike.

National and Global Tributes

As news of his passing spread, tributes poured in from across Nigeria and beyond. President Bola Tinubu described Oba Adetona as “a royal statesman and a pillar of truth whose reign brought peace, prosperity, and honor not only to Ijebu people but to the entire Yoruba race and Nigeria.”

Ogun State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun, declared a seven-day mourning period, with flags ordered to fly at half-mast across the state. “We have lost a father, a sage, and a symbol of all that is noble in Yoruba culture,” he said in a heartfelt address.

Traditional rulers across the nation have also expressed deep sorrow. The Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi, called Oba Adetona “a torchbearer of Yoruba royalty and a voice of fearless clarity.”

A Legacy Carved in Honor

Beyond his royal duties, Oba Adetona was instrumental in establishing educational and social development initiatives in Ijebuland. In 2010, he endowed the Oba Sikiru Adetona Institute for Governance Studies at Olabisi Onabanjo University, a testament to his commitment to good governance and civic engagement.

He was also known for his strong support of youth development, media freedom, and political accountability. His autobiography, “Awujale: The Autobiography of Alaiyeluwa Oba S.K. Adetona,” is widely regarded as a bold and rare insight into the mind of a traditional ruler who dared to question the status quo.

Funeral Plans Underway

Preparations for his final rites have commenced under the guidance of the Ijebu Traditional Council and the Ogun State Government. Sources say the burial will adhere to long-standing customs of the Ijebu Kingdom, with modern adaptations to reflect the scale of his legacy.

The official program is expected to span several days and will include traditional rituals, interfaith services, and a state-sponsored tribute ceremony. Dignitaries from across Nigeria and the diaspora are expected to attend.

The End of an Era

Oba Sikiru Adetona’s death marks the end of an era — a royal reign unmatched in longevity, depth, and influence. He was a custodian of tradition, yet never afraid of change. A king who walked with presidents, yet stood firmly with his people.

As Ijebuland, Ogun State, and Nigeria mourn, the memory of the Awujale will live on — in his words, his reforms, and in every young Nigerian inspired by his uncommon courage and royal dignity.

May the soul of Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona, Ogbagba II, rest in eternal peace.
