The Nigerian Senate has issued a firm and unmistakable warning to suspended Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, instructing her to stay away from the National Assembly complex amid mounting tensions over her defiance of the legislative body’s suspension order.
Senator Natasha, representing Kogi Central under the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), was suspended in June following accusations of “unparliamentary conduct” and remarks that Senate leaders claim brought the chamber into disrepute. However, despite the disciplinary action, Natasha recently declared her intention to return to plenary, sparking controversy and legal debate.
In a statement released through the Senate spokesperson, the Red Chamber emphasized that her suspension remains in full effect and any attempt to force her way back into the National Assembly would be treated as a violation of legislative rules and decorum.
“The suspension is binding and must be respected. Any deliberate move by Senator Natasha to access the premises or participate in plenary sessions will constitute a breach of Senate regulations and will be dealt with accordingly,” the Senate warned.
Security has reportedly been tightened around the National Assembly complex following reports that the senator might attempt to enter the chamber on the next legislative sitting. This development has only intensified the standoff between the Senate leadership and the embattled lawmaker.
Natasha, on her part, maintains that her suspension is illegal, politically motivated, and a blatant attempt to silence her voice in the Red Chamber. She insists that no senator can be denied access to the National Assembly without due process or a legal order and has vowed to return to represent her constituents.
Legal experts are divided on the matter, with some arguing that legislative bodies have the constitutional power to enforce disciplinary measures, while others insist that indefinite suspension without a fair hearing could be challenged in court.
Meanwhile, civil society groups and political observers are watching closely, concerned that the standoff may escalate into a constitutional crisis if not properly handled. For her supporters, Natasha’s case has become symbolic of the fight for legislative fairness and the rights of elected representatives to speak freely without fear of retaliation.
As the situation unfolds, the Senate’s warning signals a hardening stance, setting the stage for a dramatic showdown should Senator Natasha defy the order and attempt to re-enter the chamber in the coming days.
