The Lagos State Government has confiscated 10 trucks found to have violated movement restrictions on the Third Mainland Bridge, intensifying its crackdown on heavy-duty vehicles that disregard traffic regulations.

According to a statement released by the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), the trucks were impounded during a targeted enforcement operation aimed at curbing the growing disregard for the state’s bridge-access policies. The trucks were reportedly caught plying the bridge during restricted hours — a clear violation of traffic safety rules put in place to preserve the integrity of the bridge and ensure smoother vehicular flow.

The Third Mainland Bridge, one of the busiest in Africa, has long-standing restrictions that prohibit certain categories of vehicles — especially heavy-duty trucks — from accessing the route during specific times, particularly during peak hours. These rules are designed to prevent traffic gridlock, reduce structural stress on the bridge, and ensure public safety.

Speaking on the development, LASTMA General Manager, Bolaji Oreagba, stated that the operation was part of a broader initiative to reinforce discipline and compliance among commercial and industrial drivers. “We cannot continue to allow some drivers to flout the rules and endanger the lives of other road users,” he said. “The seizure of these 10 trucks is a strong signal that the law will take its full course against violators.”

The impounded trucks have been moved to a government holding facility, and their owners are expected to face heavy fines, with possible court prosecution for persistent offenders. LASTMA warned that the enforcement operation would continue, with surveillance and spot checks being intensified across the bridge and other critical infrastructure points in the state.

Residents and commuters have welcomed the action, praising the government for addressing what they described as a recurring issue. “It’s high time the rules were enforced. These trucks cause unnecessary congestion and are a real danger on that bridge,” one commuter said.

The Lagos State Government has reiterated its commitment to maintaining traffic order and protecting public infrastructure, urging all commercial drivers to abide by set guidelines or risk penalties.

As traffic volume continues to rise in the city, especially during the rainy season, authorities say strict adherence to traffic laws is non-negotiable in the effort to maintain a safer and more efficient road network.
