President Tinubu Honours Super Falcons with National Awards, Homes, and Cash Gifts

Nigeria’s victorious Super Falcons continue to bask in the glory of their recent continental triumph, as President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Kwara State Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq have jointly showered the team with generous gifts of cash and houses. The gesture comes in recognition of the team’s exceptional performance at the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), where the Falcons secured their 10th continental title in a thrilling comeback victory over host nation Morocco.

At a high-profile reception held in Abuja, President Tinubu conferred national honours on the team and announced a personal donation of $100,000 to each player, along with houses in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT). The President lauded the players for their strength, unity, and resilience, describing them as “ambassadors of hope and pride for Nigeria.”

“You made us proud, you made history, and you reminded the world that Nigeria remains a force to be reckoned with in global football. This nation owes you more than applause — we owe you appreciation, respect, and reward,” Tinubu stated during the ceremony, which was attended by top government officials, sports administrators, and jubilant supporters.

Adding to the celebration, Kwara State Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, who also chairs the Nigeria Governors’ Forum, made a surprise announcement: each player from Kwara and members of the Super Falcons with ties to the state would receive additional cash prizes and plots of land within the state. He also pledged state-sponsored support for their families and grassroots football initiatives aimed at nurturing more female talents.

Governor AbdulRazaq praised the Falcons not only for their victory but for being role models to millions of young Nigerian girls. “Your triumph is not just in football, but in inspiration. You have opened a new chapter for women in sports and you’ve reminded us that with focus and hard work, no dream is too far,” he remarked.

Team captain Onome Ebi expressed heartfelt gratitude on behalf of the squad, saying, “We are overwhelmed by the love, honour, and support from our leaders. This goes beyond the trophy — it’s about being valued and seen. Thank you for believing in us.”

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) also joined in commending both President Tinubu and Governor AbdulRazaq, describing the rewards as “unprecedented and historic” in the annals of women’s football in the country.

The Super Falcons’ victory and the national response it has triggered mark a watershed moment for Nigerian women’s sports. With the combined backing of federal and state leaders, the team’s achievement is expected to usher in a renewed focus on female athletes and the broader development of women’s football across the country.
