The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has issued a strong advisory to residents of Delta State, especially those living in flood-prone communities, to urgently relocate to safer areas as heavy rains continue to pound the region.
The warning comes amid rising concerns over potential flooding due to the intensified rainfall witnessed across the state in recent weeks. The NSCDC Commandant in Delta State, Mr. Akinsanya Iskilu Abiodun, raised the alarm during a press briefing on Wednesday, stating that forecasts from relevant agencies indicate a high risk of severe flooding that could endanger lives and property.
“We are calling on residents living in low-lying and flood-prone areas such as riverbanks, coastal zones, and swampy communities to consider temporary relocation,” Akinsanya said. “This warning is based on the increasing volume of rainfall and the likelihood of water bodies overflowing.”
He further explained that the NSCDC, in collaboration with the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), Delta State Emergency Management Agency (DSEMA), and other stakeholders, is working to monitor developments and provide early interventions where necessary. He urged communities to be proactive and not wait until disaster strikes.
The commandant also called on traditional rulers, community leaders, and youth groups to sensitize their people on the dangers of remaining in vulnerable areas, especially as flooding in past years has led to displacement, loss of livelihoods, and, in some cases, fatalities.
“Lives must come first. We are not just advising for the sake of formality—this is a serious matter. We have seen what floods have done in previous years. We must act early,” he added.
In recent times, Delta State has been one of the most affected states in Nigeria during the rainy season, with recurring floods impacting agriculture, transportation, and shelter in rural and riverine communities.
Residents are advised to stay tuned to weather updates, report early signs of flooding, and cooperate with emergency and security agencies in ensuring the safety of lives and property.
The NSCDC reaffirmed its readiness to support evacuation efforts, enforce safety protocols, and protect critical infrastructure during the rainy season.
