In a bold and sudden move, U.S. President Donald Trump has announced a new round of tariffs on Indian goods, intensifying a brewing trade dispute tied to India’s continued oil trade with Russia. The decision, made public just yesterday, is already sending shockwaves through diplomatic and economic circles.

Speaking at a campaign event, Trump criticized India for what he called “unfair trade practices” and its refusal to stop buying oil from Russia, suggesting that such purchases are helping to fund the war in Ukraine. As a result, he said the United States will impose additional tariffs on Indian imports “within 24 hours.”

This latest round of penalties follows a previous 25% tariff hike and is expected to affect a wide range of Indian exports — from electronics and pharmaceuticals to jewelry and textiles. Trump didn’t provide an exact list, but sources say the goal is to apply economic pressure on New Delhi to cut ties with Moscow.

“India has not been a fair trading partner,” Trump said. “They’ve taken advantage of us for too long, and their actions are supporting a hostile regime.”

The Indian government has responded cautiously so far, but officials in New Delhi are reportedly reviewing potential countermeasures. While India has sought to diversify its energy imports, it has continued buying discounted Russian crude — a move Trump claims undermines Western sanctions.

Business analysts warn the tariffs could hit India’s economy hard, possibly trimming GDP growth and disrupting supply chains. Still, American firms operating in India — especially those in tech and manufacturing — have indicated they remain committed, viewing India as a crucial alternative to China in global sourcing.

Meanwhile, Trump’s critics, including fellow Republican Nikki Haley, have slammed the move, warning that alienating India — a key democratic ally — could damage long-term U.S. interests in Asia.

With tensions escalating and new tariffs looming, the world is watching closely as two of the biggest democracies edge toward a possible trade standoff — one with major geopolitical and economic consequences.
