The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has issued an official apology to candidates, parents, and schools following the discovery of grading errors in the recently released 2025 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) results.

In a statement on Friday, the examination body confirmed that a technical glitch in its automated grading system led to the miscalculation of scores in several subjects, affecting thousands of candidates across West African member states. WAEC explained that the error occurred during the data processing stage and was detected after multiple complaints from candidates and school authorities.

“We sincerely regret the distress and inconvenience caused by this unfortunate incident,” WAEC’s Head of Public Affairs, Dr. Amos Danso, said. “Our technical team worked round the clock to identify and correct the error, and the revised results have now been uploaded to our official portal for candidates to access immediately.”

WAEC assured stakeholders that the integrity of the examination remains intact, stressing that no scripts were altered and that the changes only reflect corrected grading computations. The council also announced plans to conduct a comprehensive review of its results processing system, including deploying new safeguards to prevent similar errors in the future.

Affected candidates are encouraged to log into the WAEC results portal to verify their updated scores, while schools have been asked to download the revised versions for their records.

Education experts have called for more stringent quality control measures within examination bodies, warning that such mistakes could have serious implications for university admissions and scholarship opportunities.

This is not the first time WAEC has faced scrutiny over results processing, but the council says it is determined to restore public confidence and ensure the credibility of future examinations.
