Nigerian motorists have been granted a longer grace period to comply with the country’s tinted glass regulations, as the Nigeria Police Force announced another extension of its enforcement deadline to October 2025.

The move comes as part of the police’s ongoing efforts to balance public safety concerns with the realities of compliance for vehicle owners. Initially slated for earlier enforcement, the crackdown on unauthorized tinted glass usage has been pushed back multiple times following public appeals and logistical considerations.

Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, explained that the extension was necessary to allow more time for car owners to obtain the mandatory permits through the approved channels. He reiterated that the regulation is not intended to punish law-abiding citizens but to enhance national security by curbing criminal activities often associated with the misuse of tinted windows.

Under the existing law, vehicle owners with factory-fitted tinted glasses or those who have modified their windows are required to apply for and obtain an official permit from the police. Failure to do so, once enforcement begins, could result in fines, impoundment of the vehicle, or other legal penalties.

Adejobi encouraged motorists to use the extra months wisely, warning that there would be no further leniency after the new deadline. “We urge all vehicle owners to seize this grace period to process their permits and avoid last-minute rush or sanctions,” he said.

The extension has been welcomed by many car owners, especially those facing difficulties in navigating the permit application process or accessing the necessary offices. However, security experts stress that while the reprieve is helpful, compliance should be taken seriously to ensure the measure’s intended benefits for law enforcement and public safety.

With the new October 2025 deadline set, the clock is ticking for motorists to regularize their tinted glass status before the long-anticipated nationwide crackdown begins.
