Former Sokoto State governor and prominent political figure Aminu Waziri Tambuwal has been taken into custody by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) over allegations of misappropriating ₦189 billion during his tenure in office.

Sources within the anti-graft agency confirmed that Tambuwal, who is also a member of a major political coalition, was invited to the EFCC headquarters in Abuja for questioning on Monday. The interrogation reportedly centres on contracts awarded, state funds allegedly diverted, and suspicious financial transactions linked to his administration between 2015 and 2023.

According to investigators, the case involves alleged embezzlement of public funds, inflated contract figures, and unaccounted state revenues. Several former state officials, contractors, and political associates are also said to be under investigation in connection with the scandal.

While the EFCC has yet to issue a formal statement detailing the full scope of the allegations, insiders disclosed that the probe has been ongoing for months and was bolstered by findings from forensic audits of Sokoto State’s finances.

Tambuwal’s arrest has stirred political reactions across the country. Supporters argue that the move is politically motivated, targeting a key opposition figure, while critics insist it is a step toward holding public officials accountable for corruption.

As of press time, the former governor remains in EFCC custody, and it is unclear whether he will be released on administrative bail or face immediate charges in court. The agency has assured that due process will be followed, emphasizing its commitment to tackling corruption at all levels of governance.

The development comes amid a wider anti-corruption drive targeting former state governors, ministers, and other high-profile figures suspected of looting public resources. If found guilty, Tambuwal could face lengthy jail time, asset forfeiture, and a permanent ban from holding public office.
