The Minister of Works, David Umahi, has declared that all governors from the South-East are united in their support for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Speaking during a media briefing in Abuja on Sunday, Umahi dismissed speculations of political rifts within the zone, insisting that South-East leaders are aligned with Tinubu’s vision for Nigeria’s development and stability.
“There is no division among us. All the South-East governors are fully in support of President Tinubu,” Umahi said. “We are committed to ensuring that the region works with the President as he delivers his Renewed Hope Agenda for Nigerians.”
South-East’s Strategic Support
The declaration comes amid widespread debate over political alignments in the South-East, traditionally a stronghold of the opposition. Umahi, who served as two-term governor of Ebonyi State before joining Tinubu’s cabinet, stressed that the region’s leaders have chosen partnership over confrontation, particularly in securing federal projects and investments.
“President Tinubu has shown goodwill to the South-East through appointments and infrastructural development, and our governors are united in appreciating that. We cannot afford to be divided when the interest of our people is at stake,” Umahi noted.
Implications for 2027
With the 2027 presidential election gradually taking shape, Umahi’s comments signal a significant political shift that could weaken opposition momentum in the region. The show of unity among South-East governors, if sustained, may deliver a stronger bargaining position for the zone within Tinubu’s administration.
Political analysts suggest that Umahi’s statement is both a message of reassurance to the Presidency and a warning to opposition figures hoping to capitalize on perceived cracks within the region’s leadership.
Call for Unity
Umahi further urged political stakeholders, traditional rulers, and youths across the South-East to key into the Tinubu administration’s programs, particularly in the areas of road infrastructure, security, and economic empowerment.
“Unity is our strength. We must stand together with the President to ensure peace, stability, and progress for our people. This is the time for partnership, not division,” he emphasized.
