The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has expressed strong condemnation over the reported assault of a female Corps Member by operatives of the Anambra State Vigilante Group in Oba, Idemili South Local Government Area.
In a statement released on Wednesday by the Acting Director of Information and Public Relations, Caroline Embu, the scheme described the incident as “unacceptable and dehumanising,” insisting that there could be no justification for such an act.
“Management wishes to assure the general public that it believes in, and supports the ongoing investigation by the Nigeria Police Force towards unravelling what transpired. This we trust will help get justice for the Corps Member in question and any other aggrieved party,” the statement read.
The NYSC further revealed that administrative measures were already being taken to provide both medical and psychological support to the affected Corps Member. It also reiterated its unwavering commitment to the welfare and safety of all Corps Members serving across Nigeria.
Reactions Trail Viral Video
The assault, which surfaced in a viral video earlier this week, has continued to generate outrage among Nigerians. Many have called for accountability and stricter oversight of vigilante operations in Anambra State.
A former Corps Member, who served in Onitsha North LGA between 2021 and 2022, narrated his own unpleasant encounters with vigilante operatives in the state.
Identified simply as Unity from Delta State, he alleged that members of the group were often hostile and difficult to engage with, even when Corps Members presented valid identification.
“There was nowhere I went without my Corper cap and ID, but those vigilante, nothing concern them if you be Corper or not. They still almost harassed me on several occasions, but I stood my ground, and most times I outsmarted them,” he recounted.
Unity added that over time the operatives became familiar with his face, though interactions remained tense. Expressing solidarity with the assaulted Corps Member, he declared:
“I pray and hope our Delta sister gets justice. I stand with her. Justice for Elohor.”
Government’s Response
The Anambra State Government has since announced preliminary steps to address the incident. While details of the disciplinary process remain unclear, authorities have assured that accountability will be ensured.
Meanwhile, the NYSC’s firm stance has been widely welcomed as Nigerians continue to demand justice for the assaulted Corps Member and broader reforms to safeguard young Nigerians serving in the state.
