Former Vice President and 2023 presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Atiku Abubakar, has declared that his political ambition is not driven by desperation to be president but by a desire to see Nigeria become a better, secure, and prosperous nation.
Atiku made this known on Saturday in Lagos while addressing party faithful at an affirmation ceremony for new defectors into the African Democratic Congress (ADC). The event saw several bigwigs from the PDP and Labour Party officially announce their membership of the ADC.
Represented by Prof. Ola Olateju of Achievers University, Owo, Ondo State, Atiku said his political journey has always been centered on national progress rather than personal ambition.
“Atiku Abubakar’s plan is to build a better Nigeria. So, it’s not about him being the president. It’s about having a better government that will deliver for Nigerians. It’s not a personal thing for him, and that’s why some of us are with him. It’s not about Atiku having to be president at all costs,” Olateju said on his behalf.
The former PDP candidate, alongside other opposition figures, recently defected to the ADC, describing the party as more of a movement for national renewal than a mere political platform.
“ADC, to us, is not just a political party. It is a movement, a new beginning for Nigeria. We need a new journey to reposition this country and take it to great heights,” Olateju added.
Speaking on Nigeria’s current challenges, including the removal of fuel subsidy and the resulting inflation, Atiku stressed that the country could still be rescued through competent and people-focused leadership.
On the question of the ADC’s presidential candidate for 2027, Atiku clarified that the party would not impose anyone but would allow a free and fair contest to determine its flagbearer.
“Whoever emerges through a credible process will enjoy our collective support. It’s not about Atiku for president at all costs, or Obi for president at all costs. It is about Nigeria. Whoever carries the ADC ticket will represent the voice and aspiration of Nigerians,” he said.
Some of the prominent defectors who joined the ADC at the ceremony include PDP Board of Trustees member, Dr. Abimbola Ogunkelu; former Lagos PDP chairmen, Chief Muritala Ashorobi and Retired Capt. Tunji Shelle; PDP Vice Chairman (Lagos Central); and former PDP Youth Leader, Mr. Tai Benedict.
They were warmly received by top ADC leaders, including the party’s National Secretary, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola; Senator Kolawole Ogunwale; and Lagos State ADC Chairman, Mr. George Ashiru.
