Police arrest doctor over woman?s d3ath during caesarean section in Edo

The Edo State Police Command has arrested a medical doctor following the death of a 36-year-old woman, Susan Omoye-Okporan, during a surgical operation at a private hospital in Uromi, Esan North-East Local Government Area of the state.

The command’s spokesperson, CSP Moses Yamu, confirmed the arrest in a statement on Friday, August 22, 2025, noting that detectives have begun a full investigation into the circumstances surrounding the tragic incident.

“I can confirm the arrest of the doctor, and the command’s detectives are also investigating the matter,” Yamu said.

According to reports, the deceased underwent a caesarean section on August 2, 2025, at the private facility. However, she allegedly developed complications and died shortly after the procedure. Her baby was said to have survived.

Family members of the deceased accused the doctor of gross professional negligence, insisting that his alleged carelessness contributed to Susan’s untimely death.

A family source, who spoke to Punch, expressed their determination to pursue the case until justice is served.

“I am sure the doctor was careless. Performing a caesarean section is one of the easiest surgical operations due to advancement in technology. The family is ready to pursue the case to the highest level,” the source claimed.

Further findings at the command headquarters in Benin indicated that the Homicide Section of the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) had taken over the case from the Uromi Divisional Police Office more than two weeks ago.

Police sources also confirmed that an autopsy had been conducted on the deceased, with results now awaiting interpretation by medical experts to guide the next line of action.

The Edo State Police Command assured that the outcome of the investigation would determine whether the doctor would face prosecution.
