With the 2027 general elections fast approaching, the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) is bracing itself for a high-stakes internal showdown as prominent figures within the party gear up for the battle over its presidential ticket.
At the center of the brewing contest is Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State, who has steadily risen to prominence as one of the most influential voices in the PDP. Known for his pragmatic leadership style and appeal to younger voters, Makinde is seen by many as a strong contender capable of revitalizing the party’s fortunes at the national level.
The Contenders Lining Up
Makinde will not be alone in the race. Several PDP stalwarts and political heavyweights are expected to vie for the party’s flag, including:
-
Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, who, despite his age, retains significant political structures across Nigeria.
-
Former Senate President Bukola Saraki, who has consistently positioned himself as a bridge-builder.
-
Governor Bala Mohammed of Bauchi State, who is tipped as another strong northern aspirant.
-
Other influential figures within the PDP fold who are quietly building momentum and testing the waters ahead of the primaries.
Party Unity at Stake
The contest is already raising concerns about internal divisions. Analysts warn that if not carefully managed, the rivalry between the old guard and younger aspirants could deepen the rift within the party. The PDP has struggled in recent elections, and many believe that presenting a united front will be key to reclaiming power in 2027.
Insiders say negotiations, alliances, and possible consensus-building are already underway behind the scenes, as no faction wants a repeat of the bitter splits that weakened the party in the last presidential cycle.
Makinde’s Edge
Governor Makinde, one of the few PDP governors to maintain strong grassroots popularity, is banking on his record in Oyo State, where he is credited with improvements in infrastructure, education, and civil service reforms. His youth appeal and reputation as a “fresh face” may give him leverage against older, establishment candidates.
The Road Ahead
While official declarations are yet to be made by most aspirants, the political atmosphere in the PDP points to a fierce contest. The party’s ability to manage its internal democracy and produce a candidate with broad national appeal will likely determine its chances in the 2027 presidential race.
As one PDP insider put it, “This will not just be another primary—it will decide whether PDP has the strength to challenge for power again.”
