Tragedy struck on Monday at Ibeju Bus Stop along the Lekki–Epe Expressway in Lagos State when a loaded truck collided with a commercial bus, leaving six people dead and nine others severely injured.
The accident involved a blue Volvo FL6 truck carrying wooden planks and a white passenger bus with registration number AKD 336 YD. Eyewitnesses said the impact was devastating, instantly claiming the lives of two men, three women, and a child. Four other passengers miraculously escaped without harm.
Officials of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) and other emergency responders rushed to the scene. Survivors were quickly rescued and transported to the Federal Medical Centre, Epe, and Hammond Hospital for urgent medical care.
Confirming the incident, LASTMA spokesperson Adebayo Taofiq noted that the rescue operation was a joint effort involving the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), the Nigeria Police Force, and the Lagos Neighbourhood Safety Corps. He added that the bodies of the deceased had been deposited at the FMC morgue in Epe for formal identification.
LASTMA General Manager, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, expressed condolences to the families of the victims and cautioned motorists against overspeeding and reckless driving, especially during the “Ember Months,” a period notorious for road crashes in Nigeria. He emphasized the need for drivers to remain alert, obey traffic laws, and avoid distractions while on the road.
While the scene has since been cleared, the incident serves as another grim reminder of the dangers posed by careless driving and poor vehicle management on Nigerian highways.
