The crisis rocking the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) deepened on Tuesday as governors elected on the party’s platform firmly rebuffed threats issued by the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, over the upcoming national convention.

In a strongly worded response, the governors declared that “enough is enough,” warning the former Rivers State governor against actions or statements aimed at destabilizing the party. They stressed that no individual, regardless of influence, has the power to abort the PDP convention, which they described as a constitutional requirement and an essential step toward repositioning the party ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Wike had reportedly expressed dissatisfaction with ongoing preparations, hinting at moves to frustrate the convention if his concerns were not addressed. But in dismissing his threats, the PDP Governors’ Forum emphasized that the unity and survival of the party cannot be held hostage by personal grievances.

“PDP belongs to all its members. No one man, no matter how highly placed, can dictate the fate of the party. The convention will hold as planned, and it will reflect the will of our members across the federation,” one of the governors said after a closed-door meeting.

The governors further urged Wike to put aside personal differences and work with other stakeholders to ensure a smooth, transparent, and credible convention process. They maintained that what Nigerians expect from the PDP at this time is stability and readiness to offer a viable alternative to the ruling party, not internal wrangling.

Political observers note that this latest face-off highlights the lingering rift between Wike and several PDP leaders following the fallout of the 2023 elections. While some members still value his influence and political weight, others argue that his confrontational style continues to pose a threat to party cohesion.

Despite the tension, party insiders insist that preparations for the convention remain on track, with committees already inaugurated and timelines set. The PDP, they argue, must send a strong signal to Nigerians that it is ready to move beyond internal disputes and focus on reclaiming power in the next electoral cycle.
