The Lagos State Police Command has arrested a man and three accomplices for allegedly attempting to confer upon himself the title of “Obi of Lagos,” a move authorities described as unlawful and capable of misleading the public.
According to a statement issued on Wednesday, September 10, 2025, by the Deputy Public Relations Officer of the Command, DSP Babaseyi Oluseyi, the principal suspect, identified as 65-year-old Engr. Chibuike Azubike from Ideato North, Imo State, was apprehended alongside three others—Chief Chibuzor Ani (57), Chief Martins Nwaodika (65), and Mr. Ikechukwu Franklin Nnadi (41).
Police investigations revealed that the group had concluded arrangements to unveil what they called a prototype of a N1.5 billion “Palace of Obi of Lagos State” on Saturday, September 13, at Apple Hall in Amuwo Odofin. Acting swiftly on the intelligence, operatives sealed off the venue to prevent what they termed a possible breach of peace.
Oluseyi explained that the command deployed operatives from the Eko Strike Force, alongside other tactical teams, to ensure the event did not hold and to protect members of the public from being deceived. The suspects, he confirmed, remain in custody at the State Command Headquarters in Ikeja as investigations continue.
The development follows reports that a monarch from Osun State had threatened to petition against Azubike’s alleged self-installation in Lagos.
In his defense, however, Azubike claimed during a brief conversation with journalists that he was not declaring himself the “Obi of Lagos” but rather the “Obi of Ndi Igbo in Lagos,” suggesting his intention was to represent the Igbo community in the state.
Police authorities have assured that the outcome of their investigation will determine the next steps, including possible charges in court.
