The Dangote Refinery has taken a major step toward cleaner and safer fuel transportation with the official deployment of over 1,000 compressed natural gas (CNG)-powered trucks for direct fuel distribution across Nigeria.

Spokesman of the Dangote Group, Mr. Anthony Chiejina, announced on Monday that more than 1,000 CNG-powered vehicles have been stationed at the refinery’s gantry, while an additional 500 units are currently at the Lagos port awaiting clearance.

“In just one year, we transitioned from old trucks to CNG-powered vehicles. Some of the old trucks no longer met safety standards. When you see these new trucks, the difference is clear. By the end of the month, all the trucks will be in place. This is a big transformation for us,” Chiejina said.

The refinery, which began petrol production last year, has now fully embraced direct fuel distribution, cutting out reliance on third-party transporters. The initiative is expected to improve efficiency, reduce costs, and enhance safety in the movement of petroleum products nationwide.

Although the rollout was initially scheduled for August 15, it was delayed by logistics setbacks in China, where the trucks were manufactured. Dangote had placed an order for 4,000 CNG-powered trucks, but shipment was stalled due to a shortage of available vessels to transport them.

With the new trucks gradually arriving, the refinery is set to strengthen fuel distribution and advance Nigeria’s transition toward cleaner energy solutions.
