The world of alpine skiing is in mourning following the tragic death of Italian skier Matteo Franzoso, who passed away at the age of 25 after a severe crash during a training session in La Parva, Chile.
According to the International Ski and Snowboard Federation (FIS), Franzoso lost control during a jump on the slope near Santiago, suffering devastating head trauma after colliding with a wooden fence. He was airlifted to a nearby hospital and placed in an induced coma in intensive care, but sadly, he did not survive.
Rising Star Gone Too Soon
Franzoso had represented Italy in 17 World Cup races, earning his best finish in January 2023 when he placed 28th in the Super-G event at Cortina d’Ampezzo. That same year, he was crowned Italian national champion in the alpine combined discipline. His last World Cup appearance was just months ago in March, marking a promising career cut short.
FIS President Johan Eliasch expressed deep sorrow over the loss:
“On behalf of the International Ski and Snowboard Federation, I extend my heartfelt condolences to Matteo Franzoso’s family, friends, and the Italian Winter Sports Federation. The entire ski family mourns this devastating loss.”
Echoes of Past Tragedies
The accident comes less than a year after the death of 19-year-old Italian skier Matilde Lorenzi in another training crash, a heartbreaking reminder of the dangers athletes face in high-speed winter sports.
Flavio Roda, president of the Italian Winter Sports Federation (FISI), described Franzoso’s death as a “tragedy for his family and for our sport,” urging the global skiing community to prioritize safety and support for athletes.
Global Tributes
Tributes have poured in from across the skiing world. American ski legend Lindsey Vonn shared her condolences on Instagram, writing:
“I was skiing this exact slope three weeks ago… RIP Matteo. My sincere condolences to his family and loved ones.”
The loss of Franzoso has left the international sports community shaken, with many remembering him not only as a talented competitor but also as a passionate young athlete whose journey ended far too soon.
