Samsung Electronics has unveiled a major update to its SmartThings app, introducing advanced safety functions and expanding connectivity to vehicles made by Hyundai Motor Group, including Hyundai and Kia models.
One of the standout additions is SmartThings Safe, a feature designed to enhance personal safety. With a single tap on a shortcut button preset on a smartphone or tablet, users can instantly share their location with trusted contacts if they feel unwell or sense danger. These alerts can also be viewed on connected devices such as tablets, TVs, and Family Hub refrigerators.
In partnership with Hyundai Motor Group, Samsung has also introduced a Home-to-Car feature, allowing users to control key aspects of their vehicles directly through the SmartThings app. With this upgrade, drivers can remotely check ignition and HVAC status, lock or unlock doors, and start or stop charging electric vehicles. The system also supports automated routines that link vehicles with smart home devices. For example, unlocking the front door in the morning could automatically start the car and pre-cool the interior on hot days.
The vehicle control function will debut in South Korea before rolling out to other global markets.
Beyond mobility, the update improves device management within SmartThings. Users can now access diagnostics and repair history for connected devices, simplifying service visits and maintenance.
Jeong Jae-yeon, Vice President and SmartThings Team Leader at Samsung Electronics, noted that the platform is evolving into more than just a smart home hub. “SmartThings is becoming a platform that strengthens daily safety and mobility, enabling customers to live smarter and more conveniently,” he said.
