Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has firmly rejected reports claiming that he plans to step down for another presidential aspirant ahead of the 2027 general elections.

In a statement released on Thursday by his Media Adviser, Paul Ibe, Atiku described the reports as a “gross misrepresentation” of his recent interview with BBC Hausa Service. He maintained that at no point during the interview did he state, imply, or suggest that he would withdraw from the race for anyone.

“After a thorough review of the original video and transcripts of the interview – both in Hausa and in English translation – it is clear that the former Vice President did not make any statement indicating that he intends to step down for another aspirant,” Ibe clarified.

Atiku, however, reiterated his position that Nigeria’s young people and other aspirants are free to contest for the nation’s highest office, noting that he would gladly support any younger candidate who emerges victorious through a fair and competitive primary.

“What Atiku Abubakar clearly said was that if a young candidate defeats him in the primary election, he would support and mentor such a candidate. This is consistent with his long-standing call for youth inclusion in governance,” the statement added.

The former Vice President stressed that while interpretative journalism is an accepted practice, twisting statements to create misleading narratives should not be encouraged.

Atiku had previously told BBC Hausa that the African Democratic Congress (ADC) – which he recently joined – places a premium on youth and women participation. He added that if he contested for the party’s ticket and lost to a younger aspirant, he would support the winner in the interest of the party and the country.
