A coalition of market women in Benin City has praised Oba Ewuare II, the Oba of Benin, for his steadfast commitment to preserving the rich cultural heritage and traditional leadership structures of the Benin Kingdom.

The women, led by Madam Florence Ahunwan, paid a courtesy visit to the Oba’s Palace on Tuesday to express their gratitude and solidarity with the monarch. They commended the Oba for his recent clarification of Edo market leadership customs during a meeting with the Iyaloja-General of Nigeria, Mrs. Folashade Tinubu-Ojo, amid a leadership dispute among traders in the state.

According to Ahunwan, the Oba’s intervention reaffirmed the unique market leadership hierarchy within the Benin Kingdom and protected Edo traditions from external interference.

“Our great Oba has once again proven himself as the guardian of truth and culture. He has stood firmly to defend the heritage of Edo people and ensured that our market leadership remains rooted in our customs,” she said.

The traders, who opposed the imposition of Pastor (Mrs.) Josephine Ibhaguezejele as Edo market leader, expressed relief that the matter was respectfully addressed by the palace.

They sang songs of praise in honor of the monarch, describing him as a symbol of unity, wisdom, and justice for the Edo people.

Responding on behalf of the palace, Chief Osaro Idah, the Obazelu of Benin, alongside other senior chiefs, thanked the market women for their loyalty and peaceful conduct.

He assured them that their message of appreciation and support would be conveyed to the Oba and advised them to continue to promote peace and orderliness in all markets across the state.

“The palace recognizes your visit and your loyalty. His Royal Majesty appreciates your devotion to the kingdom. Continue to conduct your activities peacefully and uphold the dignity of our markets,” Chief Idah said.

The visit highlighted the enduring respect and influence of the Benin monarchy in safeguarding cultural values and mediating disputes within the community.
