Ogun State Makes History as First Commercial Flight Takes Off from Gateway International Airport In a landmark moment for Ogun State, the first-ever commercial flight departed the Gateway International Airport to Abuja

Ogun State reached a major milestone on Tuesday, October 7, 2025, as the newly constructed Gateway International Airport (GWI) officially commenced commercial operations, welcoming its first passenger flight despite heavy rainfall.

The landmark event, broadcast live by TVC News, saw enthusiastic passengers queuing for check-in at the ultra-modern terminal to board ValueJet’s inaugural flight to Abuja. The take-off marked the beginning of scheduled passenger services at the Ogun State-owned airport, which is expected to strengthen regional connectivity and stimulate the local economy.

According to Kayode Akinmade, Special Adviser to Governor Dapo Abiodun on Media and Strategy, ValueJet flights from Ogun to Abuja will operate twice weekly — on Tuesdays and Thursdays — departing the Gateway International Airport in the morning and returning from Abuja at 4:00 p.m., with arrival in Ogun around 5:15 p.m.

Governor Abiodun, speaking after receiving the Director General of the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA), Captain Chris Najomo, reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to maintaining “the highest standards of safety, efficiency, and compliance” as the airport transitions to full-scale operations.

“This airport is not just a terminal — it is a symbol of Ogun’s industrial growth and economic transformation,” Abiodun said. “We are positioning Ogun as a key aviation and investment hub in the Southwest region.”

The NCAA recently issued Aerodrome Operational Permits (AOP) to the Gateway International Airport after extensive technical inspections and regulatory assessments. The facility has been granted an Aerodrome Reference Code 3C and a Category 6 Aircraft Rescue and Firefighting Services (ARFFS) rating, allowing it to handle medium-range commercial aircraft safely.

Described by the NCAA as a “model for future aviation development in Nigeria,” the Gateway International Airport features modern infrastructure, efficient navigation systems, and a non-precision approach for Runway 05/23, supporting daytime operations from sunrise to sunset.

With commercial flights now underway, Ogun State is set to reap the benefits of increased trade, tourism, and investment opportunities — solidifying its place as one of Nigeria’s fastest-growing economic corridors.
