Former Ekiti State Governor, Ayodele Fayose, has warned that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) could lose at least three more sitting governors in the coming weeks as internal rifts continue to weaken the party.
Fayose made the remarks on Wednesday during an interview on Channels Television’s Politics Today, shortly after Bayelsa State Governor Douye Diri announced his resignation from the PDP.
According to him, the opposition party is on the verge of further depletion, with defections looming that could reduce its strength to just five governors nationwide.
“Let me tell you, there are three more governors that will leave soon. When that happens, only five will remain. Even among them, one will struggle to get the party ticket. The truth is, that ticket has become nothing more than a tissue paper,” Fayose said.
He accused certain PDP governors of accelerating the party’s collapse through their obsession with controlling its internal structures.
“They are largely destroying the party because of their greed for power. That is exactly what played out during the 2023 elections,” he added.
Fayose dismissed insinuations that President Bola Tinubu has been forcing opposition leaders to defect to the All Progressives Congress (APC), insisting that most defections are driven by personal ambition and political survival.
“The PDP should stop blaming Tinubu for its problems. The party is sick, and unfortunately, it looks like an incurable sickness,” he declared.
He further stressed that the real cause of the PDP’s turmoil lies within its own leadership, not external interference.
“Those who killed the party know themselves. There is a big difference between a sitting governor and a former governor like me. I am not the one who destroyed the PDP,” Fayose maintained.
Though still a PDP member, Fayose distanced himself from any responsibility to fix the party, saying the burden lies squarely on its current leaders to admit their failures and chart a new path.
