A tragic accident occurred in Lagos on Wednesday, October 16, when a train struck and killed a dispatch rider at the PWD Railway Level Crossing in Ikeja.

According to the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), the victim, riding a motorcycle with registration number AGL 179 QR, attempted to cross the tracks despite warning signals of an approaching train. Eyewitnesses said the rider sped toward the crossing, apparently trying to beat the oncoming train.

“He ignored the warning signals and tried to cross quickly, but the train was too close,” one witness recounted. “The impact was fatal, and the train could not stop in time.”

The train continued its journey after the collision, while LASTMA officials rushed to the scene to control traffic and secure the area. They were later joined by operatives of the Shogunle Police Division and personnel of the Lagos State Environmental Health Monitoring Unit (SEHMU), who evacuated the victim’s remains.

In a statement, LASTMA General Manager, Mr. Olalekan Bakare-Oki, described the incident as a devastating reminder of the dangers of impatience and recklessness at railway crossings.

“This unfortunate accident highlights the grave consequences of disregarding safety warnings at level crossings. We extend our condolences to the family of the deceased and urge all road users to exercise caution and patience,” he said.

Bakare-Oki stressed that both motorists and dispatch riders must strictly obey traffic rules, warning signals, and level-crossing barriers to prevent further tragedies. He also revealed that LASTMA will intensify public enlightenment campaigns and increase monitoring at railway crossings across Lagos.

“We are committed to strengthening safety advocacy and enforcement in order to safeguard lives and ensure discipline on our roads,” he added.
