Former Anambra State Governor, Chief Willie Obiano, is alive, well, and living in the United States, despite viral social media rumours claiming he had passed away in the United Kingdom.
His former Commissioner for Information, C. Don Adinuba, dismissed the reports on Friday as completely false, calling them “mischievous fabrications.”
Adinuba said he personally contacted Obiano and confirmed that the former governor remains “hale, hearty, and in excellent spirits.”
“Obiano has never lived in the United Kingdom. He resides in the United States of America. I just spoke with him,” Adinuba stated, urging the public to disregard the misleading reports.
He warned that such unfounded rumours could cause needless anxiety for Obiano’s family, friends, and the people of Anambra State.
Chief Willie Obiano, who governed Anambra State from 2014 to 2022 after succeeding Peter Obi, was born on August 8, 1955, and hails from Aguleri in Anambra East Local Government Area.
In a statement titled “Former Governor Willie Obiano is Alive, Healthy, and Kicking,” Adinuba clarified that claims of Obiano’s death in London had no basis whatsoever.
He wrote:
“The rumour that Chief Obiano has died in London is entirely false. He lives in Texas, United States. He is not only alive but strong, healthy, and impressively agile for someone who recently turned 70.”
Adinuba added that the global concern expressed — including from top international media organizations — shows the high regard many still hold for the former governor, nearly four years after he left public office for a quiet private life abroad.
“At only 70 years of age, Chief Obiano has joined the ranks of notable figures whose rumoured deaths turned out to be completely unfounded,” he concluded.
