The Catholic Diocese of Kontagora has confirmed the abduction of pupils, students, teachers, and a security guard following an armed attack on St. Mary’s Catholic Primary and Secondary Schools in Papiri, Agwara Local Government Area of Niger State.
In a statement signed by the Diocesan Secretary, Rev. Fr. Jatau Luka Joseph, the Church disclosed that the armed men struck between 1:00 a.m. and 3:00 a.m. on Friday, November 21, 2025, leaving the school community in panic and confusion.
According to the statement, one of the school’s security personnel was severely shot during the attack.
“The Diocese of Kontagora condemns in strong terms the invasion of St. Mary’s schools and expresses deep concern for the safety of the kidnapped pupils, students and staff. Security agencies were immediately notified and have since commenced coordinated efforts to secure the safe return of all victims,”
the Diocese said.
The Bishop of Kontagora assured that the Church is working closely with security agencies, community leaders and government officials to support rescue operations.
The Diocese urged the public to remain calm and continue to assist ongoing security efforts through cooperation and prayer.
“May the Lord grant quick release to those abducted and continue to protect His people from all danger,”
the statement concluded.
The Church promised to issue additional updates as soon as verified information becomes available.
