The Senate screening of Reno Omokri for an ambassadorial position erupted into a heated confrontation on Thursday, December 11, as Senators Adams Oshiomhole and Ali Ndume sharply disagreed over his suitability for the role.
The drama unfolded during the session of the Senate Committee on Foreign Affairs, where both lawmakers engaged in a tense verbal exchange, captured in a now widely circulated video.
Oshiomhole Backs Omokri, Calls Him a Patriot
Senator Adams Oshiomhole strongly defended Omokri’s nomination, insisting that the former presidential aide had consistently demonstrated loyalty to Nigeria and was deserving of the appointment.
Oshiomhole praised Omokri for publicly reassessing his long-held views when confronted with new facts that favoured national interest.
According to him:
“This young man has shown that where he sees compelling evidence in the interest of the Nigerian nation, he will boldly admit he was wrong. From what I have seen, he is hardworking and deserves the support of anyone who wants progressive governance.”
He went further to assert his authority during the exchange, saying he could not be “intimidated,” and that those without similar leadership experience should “listen” when he speaks.
Ndume Pushes Back, Insists on Due Process
Senator Ali Ndume, however, objected to the endorsement, arguing that proper procedure must be followed when screening ambassadorial nominees. He maintained that no senator should assert powers not granted to them, and insisted that the committee must not gloss over public concerns surrounding the list of nominees.
Ndume interjected several times as Oshiomhole spoke, triggering the fiery back-and-forth.
Exchange Sparks Debate
The confrontation, which momentarily disrupted the screening, has sparked conversations online about transparency, political influence, and the process of appointing ambassadors.
A video of their exchange has since been widely shared on social media.
