British-Nigerian boxing star Anthony Joshua has been discharged from hospital, two days after sustaining injuries in a fatal road accident that claimed the lives of two of his close friends, Lateef Ayodele and Cina Gami, in Nigeria.
In a joint statement released on Wednesday, the Lagos State Government and Ogun State Government, through their respective information chiefs, Gbenga Omotoso and Kayode Akinmade, confirmed Joshua’s discharge and expressed deep condolences to the families of the deceased.
According to the statement, the boxer was discharged late Tuesday afternoon after doctors certified him clinically fit to continue his recovery at home. However, officials noted that Joshua remains “heavy-hearted and emotionally devastated” by the loss of his friends.
“The governments of Lagos and Ogun states once again commiserate with the families of the two young men, Lateef Ayodele and Cina Gami, who tragically lost their lives in the road accident involving Anthony Joshua,” the statement read.
“We pray that the Almighty grants the repose of their souls and gives their families the strength to bear this painful loss.”
It was further revealed that Joshua, accompanied by his mother, visited a funeral home in Lagos on the same day to pay his final respects, as arrangements were being made to repatriate the remains of the deceased.
The statement also praised the medical team at Lagoon Hospital, Ikoyi, for their professionalism and swift response in treating Joshua and other injured individuals.
Governors Dapo Abiodun of Ogun State and Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State also extended gratitude to members of the public and President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for their support and concern during the difficult period.
