Dapo Abiodun: 65 hearty cheers to a change agent

The Ogun State Government has set a target of delivering 3,000 additional affordable housing units in 2026 as part of a broader plan to expand home ownership, drive urban renewal and strengthen the state’s housing ecosystem.

The Commissioner for Housing, Jagunmolu Jamiu Omoniyi, disclosed this while outlining the housing sector’s priorities and performance outlook for the 2026 fiscal year under Governor Dapo Abiodun’s administration.

Omoniyi said the state has adopted a structured and results-driven approach to housing delivery, combining policy clarity with effective implementation and partnerships to meet growing demand.

According to him, the housing sector has not only provided shelter but has also become a catalyst for employment, investment opportunities and economic expansion across Ogun State.

Reviewing achievements recorded over the past year, the commissioner revealed that the government completed 30 residential units at the Ibara GRA Cluster 1 Extension and delivered 100 duplexes at the President Muhammadu Buhari Estate. He described the projects as evidence of steady progress and institutional capacity within the ministry.

He added that strong patronage from residents, Nigerians in the diaspora and other stakeholders, including traditional institutions and community leaders, has continued to encourage the government to widen access to quality housing.

Looking ahead to 2026, Omoniyi said the Ministry of Housing, working with the Ogun State Housing Corporation, will intensify construction activities through a number of landmark projects. These include the development of an International Conference Centre at Iperu, a modern banquet facility with a 2,500-seat capacity, the Appeal Court headquarters with accompanying residential units, and the second phase of Ibara GRA, which will feature 50 duplexes.

The commissioner also listed planned residential developments for public office holders, including commissioners, political appointees and members of the State House of Assembly, as part of efforts to improve institutional infrastructure.

He explained that the state’s housing vision is not limited to erecting buildings but focuses on creating livable communities that promote dignity, sustainability, orderly urban growth and inclusive economic participation.

Omoniyi disclosed that several major estate projects are scheduled to advance across key locations in 2026, including Prince Courts Estate at Siun along the Abeokuta–Sagamu Expressway, ISEYA Court at Oke-Mosan, Havila Court in Ibara, Havens Court in Igbeba, Ijebu-Ode, as well as the continuation of the Ibara GRA Regeneration Scheme.

He said these initiatives are in line with the state’s 2026 “Budget of Sustainable Legacy” and reaffirmed the government’s commitment to delivering over 10,000 affordable housing units by the end of the current administration.

Providing an update on ongoing regeneration efforts, the commissioner noted that more than 150 modern housing units have already been completed at Ibara GRA, out of over 200 planned, transforming a neighbourhood previously plagued by neglect and unregulated occupation.

Reiterating the state’s 2026 housing projection, Omoniyi confirmed that the government remains on course to add 3,000 new housing units, including site-and-services schemes supported with basic infrastructure across the state.

While acknowledging challenges encountered in the previous year, the commissioner said the administration remains focused on measurable outcomes rather than distractions.

“Our focus is clear — to deliver affordable, durable and sustainable housing and to position Ogun State as a model for housing and urban development in Nigeria,” he said.
