Uganda’s President Yoweri Museveni wins seventh term: Electoral Commission

Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni, 81, has been declared the winner of the 2026 presidential election, extending his 40-year rule over the East African nation. According to the Electoral Commission, Museveni secured 71.65% of the vote, defeating opposition leader Bobi Wine, 43, who garnered 24.72%.

The election, held on Thursday, was marred by violence, intimidation, and an internet shutdown, with African observers noting that arrests and abductions had “instilled fear” among voters and civil society. Reports indicate that at least 10 people died during the electoral process, while opposition figures faced harassment.

Bobi Wine, a former musician-turned-politician, declared the results fraudulent and went into hiding following a security operation at his residence on Friday night. In a post on X, Wine stated:

“I want to confirm that I managed to escape from them. Currently, I am not at home, although my wife and other family members remain under house arrest. I know that these criminals are looking for me everywhere, and I am trying my best to keep safe.”

While police denied raiding Wine’s home, they confirmed controlled access to areas considered security hotspots, insisting measures were in place to prevent gatherings that could incite violence.

Museveni’s victory marks his seventh term in office, solidifying his status as one of Africa’s longest-serving leaders. His rule has been characterized by relative stability and economic growth, but critics have long accused him of suppressing dissent and stifling political competition.

The 2026 election further highlights the deep political tensions in Uganda, raising questions about democratic governance, human rights, and the future of opposition politics in the country.
