The Kwara State Government has approved the full reopening of schools across the state following improvements in the security situation after weeks of intensified action against bandit groups.
Schools in both the northern and southern parts of Kwara had earlier been shut as a precaution during a surge in bandit-related threats. However, authorities now say conditions have stabilised enough for academic activities to resume.
The directive was contained in a statement jointly issued by the Commissioner for Education and Human Capital Development, Dr. Lawal Olohungbebe, and the ministry’s press officer, Peter Amogbonjaye. According to the announcement, all public and private schools were instructed to reopen from Monday.
Government officials said school administrators had already been briefed on the decision, which was taken alongside ongoing security deployments aimed at safeguarding students, teachers, and school facilities.
“The government considers the present situation significantly improved compared to previous weeks,” the statement noted, while stressing that vigilance remains in place to prevent any resurgence of threats.
Authorities added that security agencies are continuing coordinated operations to consolidate recent gains, combining enforcement measures with community-based strategies to strengthen local resilience.
FG to Arraign Suspects Over Yelwata Killings in Benue
In a related development, the Federal Government has announced plans to arraign suspects arrested over the recent deadly attacks in Yelwata, Benue State, on Monday.
A statement released on Sunday said the suspects, who are believed to be directly linked to the killings in the community, will appear before Justice Joyce Abdul-Malik of the Federal High Court, Abuja.
The government said the arraignment follows extensive investigations and coordinated efforts among multiple security and intelligence agencies, which culminated in the arrests.
The Office of the Attorney General of the Federation (AGF) and Minister of Justice assured Nigerians that the case would be pursued thoroughly, describing the prosecution as a strong signal to criminal elements operating under any guise.
“The Federal Government remains resolute in ensuring that those responsible for these brutal acts face justice in accordance with the law,” the statement said.
Reiterating the commitment of the Tinubu administration, the AGF’s office stressed that the protection of lives and property remains a constitutional obligation of government.
