Warns that calls for secession could deepen insecurity and endanger Christians

A United States lawmaker, Congressman Riley M. Moore, has firmly distanced Washington from any suggestion that it supports the disintegration of Nigeria, warning that separatist movements would only aggravate insecurity and leave Christian populations more vulnerable.

Moore made the position known following a recent visit to Nigeria, where he met with senior government officials, Christian leaders, humanitarian organisations, and internally displaced persons across several regions of the country. According to him, his engagements were aimed at gaining firsthand insight into the worsening security situation and the persecution of Christians.

In a statement shared on his verified X (formerly Twitter) account, the congressman said discussions during his visit never included the possibility of Nigeria breaking apart. He stressed that such narratives were neither realistic nor helpful.

“At no point in my conversations did the issue of dividing Nigeria come up in any serious or constructive way,” Moore noted, adding that promoting separatist agendas would have dire consequences, particularly for Christians living in the North and Middle Belt.

The US lawmaker warned that weakening Nigeria’s unity could have far-reaching implications, not just for the country but for the entire region. According to him, a fragmented Nigeria would create opportunities for terrorist groups to expand their influence.

“A destabilised Nigeria would embolden extremists and make Christians—and indeed all Nigerians—less safe, both within the country and across Africa,” he said.

Moore reaffirmed his commitment to advocating for victims of violence and insecurity, regardless of religious or ethnic background. He pledged continued support for efforts aimed at protecting lives and restoring stability.

“I will continue to work to save the lives of our brothers and sisters in Christ and all Nigerians who are suffering as a result of terrorist violence and ongoing instability,” he stated.

He also highlighted the recently signed security cooperation agreement between the United States and Nigeria, describing it as a significant step toward tackling insecurity and strengthening diplomatic ties between both nations.

“The new security cooperation framework between our two countries is a critical development. It reflects our shared resolve to confront violence and deepen the longstanding relationship between the United States and Nigeria,” Moore added.
