Troops of the Joint Task Force North East, operating under Operation HADIN KAI (OPHK), have intercepted a vehicle carrying suspected terrorist funds and eliminated a senior Boko Haram commander during coordinated operations in Borno State.
According to a statement issued by the military’s spokesperson, Lt. Col. Sani Uba, soldiers at the Forward Operating Base (FOB) Chabbal Checkpoint stopped a suspicious vehicle during routine patrol along known insurgent movement corridors.
A search of the vehicle reportedly led to the recovery of approximately ₦37 million in cash and several mobile phones believed to be linked to terrorist logistics. Five occupants of the vehicle were apprehended during the interception.
Military authorities described the seizure as a significant blow to financial channels allegedly used to support extremist activities in the North East.
Commander Killed in Gwoza Engagement
In a separate but related operation, OPHK troops repelled coordinated attacks on Pulka and Mandaragirau communities in Gwoza Local Government Area. During the fierce exchange of gunfire, a senior commander of Boko Haram, identified as Abou Aisha, was fatally wounded after sustaining a gunshot injury to the neck.
Security forces also recovered weapons and other operational materials abandoned by fleeing insurgents.
While no casualties were recorded among the troops, some members of the Civilian Joint Task Force (CJTF) supporting the mission reportedly lost their lives. Injured personnel were evacuated through the Air Component of Operation HADIN KAI and Nigerian Army aviation units.
Sambisa Axis Assault Repelled
Between February 14 and 16, terrorists launched renewed assaults from the Sambisa Forest axis targeting Pulka and Mandaragirau. Troops engaged the attackers in intense firefights, successfully pushing them back.
Subsequent clearance operations along the Kimba axis revealed blood trails, shallow graves, and abandoned equipment, indicating significant losses among the insurgents. Military sources believe several wounded fighters were evacuated by their retreating colleagues.
Sustained Pressure on Terror Networks
The military high command commended the troops for maintaining operational momentum, describing the latest actions as part of a broader strategy to choke insurgent supply routes and weaken their capacity to regroup.
Authorities say the combined seizure of funds and elimination of key commanders marks a critical step in disrupting both Boko Haram and ISWAP operations in the region.
Operation HADIN KAI, the military’s flagship counter-insurgency campaign in the North East, continues to focus on dismantling terrorist networks, protecting vulnerable communities, and restoring stability across Borno and neighbouring states.
