Nigeria’s anti-corruption landscape witnessed a dramatic turn as former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, was moved from the custody of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) over an ongoing probe reportedly linked to ₦432 billion.

In a late-night statement, the ICPC confirmed that the former governor is currently being held by the commission in connection with active investigations. The statement, signed by the Commission’s spokesperson, J. Okor Odey, did not disclose the specific allegations or indicate how long El-Rufai would remain in custody.

From EFCC Grilling to ICPC Detention

Before his transfer, El-Rufai had reportedly been questioned by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission over financial transactions and projects executed during his tenure as Kaduna State Governor between 2015 and 2023.

While the EFCC has yet to release an official breakdown of the allegations, insiders suggest the inquiry is part of a sweeping financial review involving contracts, state expenditures, and public infrastructure spending during his administration.

The handover to the ICPC signals a deepening of the investigation, with anti-corruption agencies tightening scrutiny around fiscal decisions made under his leadership.

APC Reacts: “He Is Sulking and Selfish”

Meanwhile, the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) has reportedly criticized the former governor, describing his recent posture as “sulking” and “selfish.”

Party insiders claim El-Rufai’s public comments and political stance in recent months have strained relationships within the APC. Though the party stopped short of directly linking his legal troubles to internal politics, the timing has fueled speculation about deeper political rifts.

Silence from El-Rufai’s Camp

As of press time, El-Rufai’s legal team had not issued a detailed response regarding the latest development. Supporters of the former governor insist the investigations are politically motivated, while critics argue that due process must take its course.

The case now places El-Rufai at the center of one of the most closely watched anti-corruption probes in recent Nigerian political history.

Whether the investigation leads to formal charges remains to be seen, but the unfolding events have once again spotlighted accountability and transparency in public office.
