Tinubu appoints new CBN Deputy Governor

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has nominated Lamido Abubakar Yuguda for appointment as a Deputy Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), pending confirmation by the Senate.

The nomination was made in line with the provisions of Section 8(1) of the Central Bank of Nigeria Act, which empowers the president to appoint the bank’s deputy governors subject to legislative approval.

In a statement issued by the presidential spokesman, Bayo Onanuga, the presidency explained that Yuguda’s nomination follows the recent redeployment of former CBN Deputy Governor Bala Bello, who has taken up a new role as Special Adviser to the President on Political Economy.

According to the statement, the president urged the appointee to approach the new responsibility with dedication and professionalism, stressing the importance of strong leadership in safeguarding Nigeria’s economic stability and supporting sustainable growth.

Yuguda previously served as Director-General of the Securities and Exchange Commission Nigeria, a position he held between 2020 and 2024, where he played a key role in overseeing Nigeria’s capital market reforms and regulatory framework.

An accomplished financial expert, Yuguda graduated in 1983 with a Bachelor’s degree in Accountancy from Ahmadu Bello University. He later earned a Master’s degree in Money, Banking and Finance from the University of Birmingham in 1991.

He is also a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria and holds the globally recognized Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) designation.

Yuguda began his professional career in 1984 at the Central Bank of Nigeria as a Senior Supervisor in the Foreign Operations Department. He later gained international experience as an economist in the Africa Department of the International Monetary Fund, where he served between 1997 and 2001 before returning to the CBN.

After years of service at the apex bank, he rose to become Director of the Reserve Management Department, a role he held for six years before retiring from the CBN in 2016.

If confirmed by the Senate, Yuguda is expected to bring decades of experience in central banking, international finance, and capital market regulation to the leadership team of the apex bank.
