Former heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua is preparing to resume full training as he sets his sights on returning to the ring later this year, with a potential blockbuster showdown against fellow British star Tyson Fury still a possibility.
Joshua, now 36, last stepped into the ring on December 19 when he defeated Jake Paul via stoppage in the sixth round. However, the victory was quickly overshadowed by a devastating incident just days later.
Roughly ten days after the bout, Joshua was reportedly involved in a serious road accident in Nigeria that resulted in the deaths of two of his close associates, Kevin “Latz” Ayodele and recovery therapist Sina Ghami. While Joshua survived the crash, he sustained injuries and has since been recovering physically while coping with the emotional toll of the tragedy.
Despite the difficult period, the two-time world heavyweight champion has gradually begun easing back into training. Reports indicate he has been working out again at Finchley ABC, the amateur gym where his boxing journey first began.
His promoter, Eddie Hearn, confirmed that preparations are underway for Joshua’s return to a full training camp, hinting that a comeback fight could take place during the summer.
Speaking about Joshua’s readiness, Hearn explained that the boxer appears both physically and mentally prepared to step back into the demanding routine of professional training.
According to him, fighters often find their greatest sense of focus and purpose while in camp, where discipline, structure, and a clear objective drive their daily routine.
Before the accident, Joshua had been in discussions about returning to Saudi Arabia for a potential summer bout that could eventually lead to a long-anticipated clash with Fury.
Meanwhile, Fury is scheduled to face Arslanbek Makhmudov in a comeback fight at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on April 11.
Hearn suggested that Joshua may take another fight first before stepping into a highly anticipated all-British heavyweight showdown with Fury. However, he did not completely rule out the possibility of Joshua jumping straight into that blockbuster matchup.
For now, the immediate focus remains on Joshua’s return to full training, after which decisions about his next opponent and the direction of his comeback campaign will be made.
